Walney School’s Charity Committee is responsible for all fundraising efforts in school, ranging from gala days and cake sales to non- uniform days and fun runs!
We work on behalf of local and national charities, as well as our own school fund, to raise money to benefit charitable causes. Our aim is to raise awareness of charitable causes and community work and ensure our school is at the heart of the community.
Our Committee is a small group of volunteer pupils in years 7-10, who have an interest in charitable causes and lending a hand in whatever way they can. They raise awareness throughout the school and help not only to organise key events, but also contribute to make sure that it runs smoothly.
Last school year (2014-2015) we raised money on behalf of: the Princess Alexis fund, the Royal Marines Charitable Fund, the Variety Club and also for our own Walney School Charitable Fund.
We did this with the help our our committed staff and students who baked, bought and raffled all they could – with the support of local businesses who also donated prizes for our causes. Our first major event was rounded off with the launch of 500 pink balloons! Our 2014/15 year was topped off fabulously with a 10km sponsored walk around Walney Island. A great time was had by all!
This year, our fundraising has taken us in many directions and towards many worthy causes. Our first foray into our 2nd year of fundraising has seen us raise money through a non-uniform event for Barrow Heart-Start, allowing us to purchase a defibrillator and housing for Walney residents. Following this, we have chosen ‘Action Duchenne’ as our Walney School supported charity of the year; in order to raise awareness of a condition close to the hearts of our school community. The Christmas term was ended in spectacular fashion with a Santa Dash – a 1 mile sponsored run/walk which raised a grand total of £896.
The year continues with many more fabulous events to come:
Friday 13th March – Comic Relief
Friday 22nd May – Spring Gala
The Annual Walney School 10km Walk – TBC
Along with many a cake sale and fun times along the way.
Follow our progress here!
