"High Standards and High Expectations by all and for all"

Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College was established in 1979 as the sixth form for Furness and the surrounding area and is the only Sixth Form College in Cumbria.  Every year we welcome many students from Walney School (as well as students from a wide area in the southwest of our county) to a pleasant site on the outskirts of Barrow, near Furness Abbey. Click here to check where we are and plan your journey to come and visit us.  Our students love the mix of being with friends from school as well as making many new friends who share their interests.
We are the specialists in the education of sixth form students and the ethos of our college reflects that.  We understand very well the journey you are embarking on from school to university or employment and will help you to make that transition.  We encourage you to look at our website and prospectus to get the information you need to decide whether to apply to and enrol with us.  We hope to welcome you as a student and, in due course, celebrate your success as you progress from Sixth Form College to university or into employment.
Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College is more than the best place to gain academic qualifications. It is a bridge between school and higher education or employment.  At Sixth Form College, you will enjoy developing skills, responsibility and self-discipline as a member of a caring and vibrant community, as well as gaining the academic qualifications you need.  Although the college's main work is to provide full-time courses for students aged 16 to 18, an small number of adult learners are also recruited who fit in very well.  We offer 35 A level subjects alongside a few other carefully selected and valued qualifications and we offer them in any combination.  Approximately 80% of our students aged 16 to 18 are enrolled on to advanced level courses.  Alongside A levels, students can select from a small range of GCSE and other courses designed to allow them to achieve five A*-C grades or the equivalent, if they did not achieve this at school.  To see a full list of the courses we offer please click here.
We have a campus of which we are justifiably proud.  The College is housed in purpose-built accommodation including all the specialist facilities you would expect, set amongst pleasant surroundings.  Over the past few years over £1.5 million has been spent on improvements.  These have been focused on improving the facilities for learning and have included laboratories,  the library, a new learning hub and quiet study area, the dining room as well as many classrooms.
Teaching at the Sixth Form College is by experts, which helps you to enjoy your courses as well as get good results and learn to take more responsibility for your own learning in preparation for university of employment.  Our results are very good, and so they should be.  Our value added measures are very good by national standards.  Quite simply, for the courses we offer, you can expect to get better grades with us.
Of course, it is vital that you choose the right courses to enable you to progress onto the university courses and jobs that you want.  We are experts at giving you the right information, advice and guidance to ensure that you enrol onto the right course and are proud to hold the Matrix standard in recognition of this.  We recruit with integrity; if we think you would be better off following a course that we do not offer then we will be honest and tell you.  We will discuss with you any consequences of your choice of courses, in particular the opportunities that success on them will afford you and the demands of universities and employers.
We will have high expectations of you, but we recognise the support that you will need to reach the high goals we set, and we will provide that support.  It might be help with a subject you're finding difficult, personal support or support with specific learning difficulties.  Whatever your need or difficulty, we recognise our responsibility to help you overcome it or find away around it.
If we offer courses that suit you then we hope you will consider applying to join us.  You might like to follow us on Twitter or Facebook.  If there is any further help or information you need please contact us through our website or email us at principal@barrow6fc.ac.uk.  We look forward to meeting you.
